Drawings from Malliol by a British Art Teacher and

his students at Himeji City Art Museum

The sculptures of one of the great Modern sculptors, Aristide Malliol

(1861-1944) are currently being exhibited at Himeji City Art Museum

(sponsored by the Yomiuri Newspaper, Osaka)

On 8th October an Osaka Art Teacher, Mr. Richard Field(44) visited

the exhibition with two of his students in order to draw some of the

sculptures. Mr. Field was born in England and came to live in Japan 7

years ago. He teaches Art at Takatsuki Y.M.C.A.

Although this Museum had a Drawing Open Day on 24 September,

their usual policy is to prohibit drawings of their exhibits. However,

Mr. Field contacted the Parisian owner of the sculptures directly and

obtained special permission to draw them.

He entered the exhibition with a chair and sketchbook and when

he had selected the view of a sculpture that he wanted to study he drew

very seriously with pencil on paper. Some of the people attending the

exhibition on that day watched very curiously as Mr. Field and his

students sketched the sculptures.

While making a sketch of a sculpture called the Three Nymphs ,

Mr. Field told our reporter that although he preferred to study the

sculptures of Rodin, he greatly admired the delicacy of Malliol's works.

He said that drawing from famous works should not be only copying. Artists

should study and learn from the great masters, but develop their own ideas

and style. With that Mr. Field continued to draw.
